London Terror: Car Rams Crowd Near Parliament

Jordan Kirkland - August 16th, 2018

A car hit and injured pedestrians and cyclists, then struck a security barrier outside London’s House of Parliament early Tuesday morning.

Shortly after, armed police officers swarmed the silver Ford Fiesta, and took the driver out of the vehicle. The driver made no effort to resist, and remained calm while being handcuffed.

The police said the driver, who is believed to be in his late 20’s, was the only person in the car. No weapons were found in the vehicle. As of now, little is known about the driver – besides his age and vehicle.

Currently, three people are being treated for injuries, none of them appear to be life threatening.

Prime Minister Theresa May said on Twitter, “My thoughts are with those injured,” and she thanked “the emergency services for their immediate and courageous response.”

President Trump, who has been critical of the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, was quick to weigh in.

“Another terrorist attack in London,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “These animals are crazy and must be dealt with through toughness and strength!”

Police are treating this as a terrorist attack, given the recent events.

In March 2017, an assailant driving a sports utility vehicle hit pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and stabbed a police officer. Four people, including the assailant, were killed, and at least 40 others were wounded.

A month after the Westminster attack, a 27-year-old man carrying knives was apprehended near Parliament. He was charged with planning a terrorist attack.

Then in June of 2017, three men killed six civilians near London Bridge, and wounded a dozen more.
